About AMR and WAV Formats
What is AMR?
AMR is a speech codec standardised by 3GPP in 1999 for mobile phone calls. Narrowband AMR samples at 8 kHz and uses 4.75-12.2 kbps, so files are tiny but limited to telephone-quality voice.
Commonly used for:
- Phone call recordings
- Voice notes on older and Android phones
- Voicemail systems
What is WAV?
WAV was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and stores audio as uncompressed PCM samples. CD-quality stereo WAV (16-bit, 44.1 kHz) uses about 10 MB per minute, and every audio editor, DAW and media player can open it.
- Recording, editing and mixing in any DAW
- Mastering and archiving at full quality
- Broadcast, sampling and sound-design work
- Maximum compatibility with hardware and software
Why convert AMR to WAV?
Few desktop players and transcription tools read AMR; WAV makes voice recordings playable and editable anywhere.
