About WAV and AIFF Formats
What is WAV?
WAV was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and stores audio as uncompressed PCM samples. CD-quality stereo WAV (16-bit, 44.1 kHz) uses about 10 MB per minute, and every audio editor, DAW and media player can open it.
- Recording, editing and mixing in any DAW
- Mastering and archiving at full quality
- Broadcast, sampling and sound-design work
- Maximum compatibility with hardware and software
What is AIFF?
AIFF was created by Apple in 1988 and, like WAV, stores uncompressed PCM audio. The two are equivalent in quality; AIFF is simply more common on macOS and in Logic Pro.
Commonly used for:
- Mac-based music production
- Logic Pro and GarageBand projects
- Professional audio exchange
Why convert WAV to AIFF?
Some Mac workflows and older Apple software prefer AIFF; the conversion is lossless because both formats store PCM.
