About RAW and WAV Formats
What is RAW?
A .raw audio file contains bare PCM samples with no header, so nothing in the file says what sample rate, bit depth or channel count it uses. WAV is essentially the same data with a header added.
Commonly used for:
- Embedded systems and hardware recorders
- Game and DSP development
- Telephony and IVR prompts
What is WAV?
WAV was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and stores audio as uncompressed PCM samples. CD-quality stereo WAV (16-bit, 44.1 kHz) uses about 10 MB per minute, and every audio editor, DAW and media player can open it.
- Recording, editing and mixing in any DAW
- Mastering and archiving at full quality
- Broadcast, sampling and sound-design work
- Maximum compatibility with hardware and software
Why convert RAW to WAV?
Without a header most players cannot play raw audio at all; wrapping it in WAV makes it playable everywhere.
